We Welcome You

If it feels like home when you walk in the door at The Lake Merritt, it is because of the energy and vision that we have dedicated to the property since we acquired it over 25 years ago!

That home-like feeling has come from our love for this unique place, one of Oakland’s treasured, historic landmarks.  You will notice our attention to detail, the elegance of our light-filled spaces and well-designed comforts.  All have been created to make your living at The Lake Merritt a pleasure.

As 3rd & 4th generation Oaklanders, we are hands-on owners and you will see us and our family members here a lot.  We laughingly say that sometimes we are here so much that the lobby is like our living room and the Terrace Room Restaurant is our dining room.

The Lake Merritt came into being because we fell in love with the building and haven’t let go.  We helped save it from a condo developer’s wrecking ball and our efforts have transformed it into one of the most beloved and special places in Oakland.  It’s complete with top-notch amenities, healthy cuisine, a dining room with a fantastic view and wonderful caring employees.  We provide independent senior living in a gracious environment to age in place.  You can call it home.

Our staff enjoys building relationships, knowing you as a person, and providing the cheerful personal service that is our hallmark.  You’ll enjoy knowing our long-term staffers, the familiar faces of people who like working here and with us.  They are solid, stable and reliable.  They work to high standards to make residents feel part of a community.  We are family owned and operated - not the typical revolving door of service providers you’ll find elsewhere.  Please join us here at The Lake Merritt!

Location, Location, Location!

You’ve heard it before and it is another of the major reasons that people move to The Lake Merritt.  Yes, it’s a great building, but there is more.  Each apartment home comes with a view; often a spectacular one.  The City is at your doorstep with transit and BART services, the Main Public Library and the renowned Oakland Museum, just steps away.  Shopping is nearby too, and just across the street is one of the Bay Area’s stellar jewels:  Lake Merritt.  Recent lake improvements, funded by a voter-approved $198 million bond, are making our residents’ experience even better.  Right out the door is a new four-acre waterfront park, lots of walking trails, bike paths, new landscaping, and an enhanced wildlife refuge, often home to over 100 species of migrating birds.

The Jewel on the Lake

When it first opened, the Lake Merritt Hotel was hailed as the most illustrious hotel in the City. This Mediterranean Art Deco building, designed by acclaimed architect William Weeks took advantage of the magnificent view. The hotel’s success was due in part to its very spacious suites.  Initially built to be an apartment hotel, it boasts high ceilings, crown moldings, and extraordinarily large rooms with full kitchens.  Under our direction, it has been completely renovated and restored.

A hot spot for locals for decades, our Terrace Room has been host to the best in dining and entertainment with many nightclub headliners.  Its glass walls offer enchanting views overlooking the lake along with a scenic lake-view mural painted by Oakland’s distinguished muralist and sculptor, Andre Boratko.  The Terrace Room continues to be open to the public, hosting a popular Sunday brunch and other special events.  This concept allows great value for our permanent residents and their families.  Delicious meals, using quality fresh ingredients provide healthy, nutritious options.  All resident meals are created under the direction of our Executive chef and service staff.

Join Us on the Lake - Small and Intimate, yet Grand at the Same Time
